European Union Announces Road Overhaul
The European Commission has proposed a comprehensive overhaul of road safety and vehicle registration rules to ensure better road safety and air quality.
According to industry sources, the new European Union (EU) rules will take into account the growing presence of electric vehicles and adapt to emerging technologies. The rules will include:
- Enhanced inspections, including periodic technical inspections for electric vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems
- Annual inspections for older cars and vans
- Advanced emission testing methods to detect high-emitting vehicles to reduce fine particles pollution.
The Commission also seeks to introduce digital vehicle registration and periodic testing certificates which will simplify cross-border data sharing to protect citizens against fraudulent activities such as odometer tampering. Periodic technical inspections will be made easier for those temporarily residing in another EU country.
